I'm just back from a trip to the US - flew out in mid-February. Absolutely no problems with knitting needles, for which I was extremely glad!

I flew from London in September. No knitting allowed out of London at that time. If you have to reclaim your luggage along the way, you could get out your knitting once you hit your next stop. American planes don't mind knitting, within reason. I don't think they would allow huge long needles, or huge fat ones. I hope this helps.
